A bevel gearbox can be used in potentially explosive environments if it is specifically certified for such applications – e.g., in accordance with ATEX or IECEx standards. To ensure safe operation without generating ignition sources, the gearbox must be designed with the following measures:
- Limitation of surface temperature (depending on the temperature class)
- Prevention of mechanical sparks, achieved by properly designed gears and bearings
- Reliable lubrication to avoid friction-induced heat
- Grounding and conductive surfaces to prevent electrostatic discharge
- Optional sensors for monitoring temperature or oil levels
These design principles ensure compliance with the requirements of the assigned Ex-zone while minimizing explosion risks.
