An electromechanical actuator is an industrial gearbox that converts electrical energy into mechanical motion – usually in the form of force or torque. In the context of linear motion technology, an electromechanical linear actuator is a self-contained system that translates the rotary motion of an electric motor into a linear push or pull motion in order to position loads exactly.
Electromechanical is thus deliberately in contrast to fluid-based technologies (hydraulics, pneumatics): the solution is clean, energy-efficient and digitally controllable – ideal for modern, data-driven automation environments (Industry 4.0). At ZIMM, the actuator is therefore not just a drive, but an intelligent motion component that can be integrated seamlessly into machine concepts.
It is the power source and converts electrical energy into rotation. Depending on the requirements, DC or AC motors are used, often servo or stepper motors for maximum precision.
It converts the fast, low-torque motor motion into slower, high-torque motion. In linear actuators, this task is typically performed by a screw drive (trapezoidal screw drive or ball screw drive) to convert rotation into linear lifting motion – with high efficiency and precise repeatability.
The housing protects the components and absorbs reaction forces; integrated guides ensure precise, stable motion. The result is a compact, self-contained unit – without external pumps, tanks, valves or hoses, which optimises installation and required space. In practice, ZIMM supplements this with add-on parts from the ZIMM modular system as well as simple CAD configuration with 2D/3D data and bill of materials.

Thanks to precision, controllability and cleanliness, electromechanical actuators are used in numerous industries – from industrial automation (e.g. exact positioning tasks in handling, gripping, testing) through mechanical engineering and laboratory technology all the way to retrofit projects, where older mechanical or hydraulic solutions are efficiently replaced. ZIMM supports the design with the ZIMM modular system and the CAD product configurator and offers suitable options (such as screw drive variants, safety/monitoring functions) for fast, scalable integration.
